  6. Important Information about Macintosh® Communications Toolbox 1.0

The Macintosh® Communications Toolbox 1.0 software is only intended for use with System 6, specifically version 6.0.4 or higher. If you are sure you are installing on a System 6 machine go to the “System 6 Installation” instructions below. If you are having difficulties or are unsure of the Macintosh system software version you are using then read the following section.

  13. If you are running some version of System 7, you do NOT require the Communications Toolbox installer disk. Every copy of System 7 has the Communications Toolbox built-in. If you try to use “Easy Install” on a disk with System 7 installed on it, you will get the following error dialog.

  37. If you try to use the “Customize” option on a disk with System 7 installed on it, you will get the following generic error message.

  51. If you see either of these error messages, you should check the version of the Macintosh system software you have installed and which disk you are trying to install the Communications Toolbox on.

  57. The Installer script on the “Communications 1” disk will install the Communications Toolbox into the file called “System” on a disk that you select. Before installing the Communications Toolbox, you should have already installed Macintosh system software onto that disk.

If you are installing onto an 800K or SuperDrive™ floppy disk, you should install “minimal” system software in order to leave enough room (more than 200K) for the Communications Toolbox and some communications tools. Because of limited disk space, Apple does not recommend the use of the Communications Toolbox on 800K floppy disks. The Communications Toolbox works best when installed on a hard disk.

After running the Installer script on a particular disk, you can either reboot your machine from that disk, which causes the Communications Toolbox software to create a folder titled “Communications Folder” in the System Folder or you can create the “Communications Folder” yourself by choosing “New Folder” from the file menu. After the “Communications Folder” has been created you can then install communications tools by opening your System Folder and simply dragging the Communications Toolbox tools into the folder titled “Communications Folder”. Under System 6 the Communications Toolbox only finds Communications Toolbox tools which have been placed in the “Communications Folder”.
